Sierra Central & the volcanoes avenue

A majestic double range of snow topped volcanoes is marking this natural avenue, containing indigenous villages with colorful markets. The equatorial Andes are often compared to a back spine although there are people that say that it looks more like a pirogue. The Este and Oeste Cordilleras form its sides and the transversal ranges linking them, lower and called nudos, form their banks. Between each nudos and at an altitude of 2300 to 3000 m, there is a valley with fertile volcanic ground. These valleys are densely populated and extensively exploited and have already been occupied by different ethnical groups in the pre Inca era. The Panamerican road and the railway both trace between the cordilleras in the South-North direction, following the shape of the nudos, passing fields with astonished cows at the base of a range of active or inactive volcanoes, some topped with permanent snow. In 1802 the exploratory Alexander Von Humbolt called this way the “Volcanoes Avenue”. The geographical location of Ecuador made it possible to travel along this avenue in the palm trees and the orchids while seeing tundra style vegetation with glaciers and fields of snow higher above you. While leaving the valley to climb up the slopes you will be able to cross every kind of ecosystem, from the subtropical area to the altiplano area.
