TRAVEL BOOK

Day 1: Santiago de Chile - Puerto Montt - Puerto Varas - Petrohué - Puerto Varas

Private transfer from your hotel to Santiago airport.
Domestic flight from Santiago to Puerto Montt (time to be confirmed, flight indicated in option).

Arrival at Puerto Montt and transfer in a private vehicle to Puerto Varas next to Llanquihue lake.

In the morning drive to the Petrohue waterfalls, where we will take a short walk to get closer to the falls and enjoy the view with the volcano Osorno in the background. Then, drive up to the Osorno ski resort. The view from the top of the volcano is stunning: numerous volcanoes and Lake Llanquihue, third largest lake in South America. Continue round the lake to reach Frutillar, a small town founded in 1856 by the German settlers. Today this city is known for its beautiful German style houses.
Return to Puerto Varas at the end of the day.

Day 2: Puerto Varas - Caleta Gonzalo - Pumalin Park


This morning, you will leave for Patagonia. It is a first day to have a taste of the magnificent landscapes of the carretera austral. You will go from ferries to tracks through lush vegetation along the fjords to reach Pumalín National Park. A first ferry allows you to cross the Reloncaví Estuary and arrive in Hornopirén. You have to be in Hornopirén before 11:00 in order for you to take the ferry to cross the fjord (4 hours).
You will arrive in Caleta Gonzalo by the fjord. It is possible for you to hike in the primary forest of Pumalín National Park.
Night in a small cabin. Free meals.

Night at the Cabanas Caleta Gonzalo ***

Day 3: Caleta Gonzalo - Puyuhuapi

From Caleta Gonzalo, drive through Pumalin Park and follow the Carretera Austral winding on the hills and valleys of Patagonia. You will get to Chaiten Park from where you can admire the same named volcano which engulfed the city after its eruption in 2008. Then, the road goes along the Pacific Ocean and will lead you to Chaiten. Continue to La Junta and to Puyuhuapi where you will spend the night.

Day 4: Puyuhuapi - Coyhaique


You will start from Puyuhuapi, a small village at the end of a fjord which is known for the producing of handcrafted carpets.
You will go down the Carretera Asutral alongside the Palena River, crossing various natural parks.
You will vvisit Queulat National Park to see its hanging glacier above the lagoon. This park contains multiple unexplored areas, reason why it still has savage and preserved landscapes.
Then, you will continue towards the only important city in this part of Patagonia: Coyhaique and its famous road, “Avenida Norte Sur”, which offers beautiful views of the Simpson River. The architecture is worth the detour.
The landscapes will slowly change. It is the place where the Tehuelches Indians used to live. Those indigenous people, known for their height (2 m), have long since disappeared.

Day 5: Coyhaique - Cerro Castillo National Park - Puerto Tranquilo


Arrival at Coyhaique airport, the capital of the region, where you will meet your driver.
You are now in the region of the "Carretera Austral", surrounded by national parks and reserves, fjords, and mountains. Head south to cross the Cerro Castillo National Reserve. You will come accross the Laguna Verde and Laguna Cofré before arriving at the General Carrera Lake, one of the largest in South America.

Day 6: Puerto Tranquilo - Lagoon San Rafael National Park - Puerto Tranquilo - Puerto Bertrand - Puerto Guadal

Day excursion to visit the Laguna San Rafael and the fjords. Excursion to the Laguna San Rafael and its fjords. Boat trip along the canals and fjords to discover the wonderful fauna and flora of the area. Enter the San Rafael National Park, one of the biggest in Chile and head to the laguna. If weather allows it, you will see the glacier from up close on a boat (7-9 passengers) navigating among floating icebergs while having a glass of whisky "on the rocks" with thousand-year old ice.
Breakfast and Lunch included.
Return to Puerto Rio Tranquilo.
This morning, head to the Baker river. Drive along Lake Ganaral Carrera. You will arrive at Puerto Bertrand, a small, isolated village on the banks of Lago Bertrand. You will then head to Puerto Guadal. On the other side of Lake General Carrera is Argentina and the lake has another name, Lake Buenos Aires. Arrival in Puerto Guadal. Enjoy the beautiful view on the lake and the Mount San Valentin.

Day 7: Glacier Leones - Puerto Guadal - Glacier Leones - Puerto Guadal


Experience a day trip aboard the Patagonia Jet, departing from Puerto Guadal.
Navigation on Lake General Carrera to the outlet of the Leones River. You will travel for 40 minutes up to the Leones River and then walk to reach Lake Leones. You will then navigate some more towards the spectacular Leones Glacier, where you can observe three separate branches of the glacier calving into the lake.
You will stop for lunch in front of the glacier before you return at 17:00.

Day 8: Puerto Guadal - Chile Chico - Puerto Ibanez - Coyhaique


This morning, you will leave Puerto Guadal to get to Chile Chico. You will see the Argentinean side of the lake which over there is called Lake Buenos Aires. You may take your time to drive along the General Carrera Lake. The road is so beautiful that it is likely that you make regular stops. The landscape changes a lot over few kilometers and becomes more deserted. It is possible to visit Cueva de las Manos and to hike among breathtaking landscapes in the sector Piedra Clavada and the Valle Lunar around Chile Chico.

Early in the morning you cross the lake by boat. (See timetable, depending on the day of the week, and weather conditions). We drive up to Coyhaique once the other side of the lake. You then continue to Puerto Aysen.
