TRAVEL BOOK

Day 1: Juan Santamaria Airport - San José

Welcome to Costa Rica ! Reception at the Juan Santamaria International Airport near San José , at 1150 meters above sea level in the heart of the Central Valley.
First contact with Costa Rica, your private driver will give you your travel documents and will take you to your hotel.

Your english speaking guide will escort you to your hotel.

Night at Grano de Oro Hotel.

Day 2: San José - Pacuare River

Leave early in the morning to San José to join the embankment of the Pacuare river. On the way you will stop to enjoy a typical breakfast, then the guides will teach you the safety procedures and the navigation skills.
Equipped for the adventure you will board on the rafts and start to navigate in the canyons and the opulent vegetation through a thick and wild jungle. You will hold your breath in some rapids!
Arrival to the lodge in the middle of the nature for lunch time. Relax in the afternoon, swinging in your hammock stress-less, or continue the adventure with a trek to a waterfall or a trip above the canopy.
At dark you will be served an drink before the dinner.

Day 3: Pacuare River


Day to explore the lodge surroundings as you feel. The place is the perfect departure point for treks at the heart of the nature to discover the local flora.
You will enjoy a guided trek and get the thrill of a an unforgettable canopy tour.

Day 4: Pacuare River - Siquirres - Bajo del Toro

After waking up at the sounds of the tropical forest and of the Rop Pacuare rapids, you will enjoy a tasteful breakfast.
Then continue your trip towards Siquirres
Continue your journey by road to Bajo del Toro, near the Poas Volcano.
Along the way you can stop into the area of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, and visit a pineapple plantation.
Arrival in the Vara Blanca region and at the hotel.
End of day.

Day 5: Bajo del Toro

Free day to explore the exotic and relaxing environment, hiking or horseback riding.
Several trails lead to waterfalls where you can observe the flora and fauna.

Day 6: Bajo del Toro - Arenal Volcano

Leave early in the morning to go to the area of La Fortuna and its impressive volcano Arenal (1,635 meters).
On the way, and if you have enough time, you will have the opportunity to discover the Poas volcano, which 1,6 km diameter and 300 meters deep crater is known as the biggest active crater in the world.
Visit the small volcano centre of the National Park. From a large viewing platform you will have an unbelievable view on its crater and its sulfur fumarolles. If the weather is clear you will also be able to see the Caribbean see and the Pacifique ocean.
Get back on the road to go to La Fortuna.
Arrive in San Carlos and relax at the hotel near the volcano Arenal.

Day 7: Arenal Volcano - Tenorio Volcano

Discover the Arenal National Park hiking around the Arenal volcano, on the paths covered with ancient volcanical ashes and native vegetation specific to the area. If the weather is clear enough you will even have the chance to enjoy a beautiful view of the Arenal lake.

Departure for volcanoes Miravalles (2,028m altitude) and Tenorio (1,916m altitude). The straight road crosses the rural area of San Rafael de Guatuso.
Arrival at the hotel, a few kilometers after Bijagua, in an area of vast vegetation.

Day 8: Tenorio Volcano

Explore the Tenorio Volcano National Park. You will pass through jungle, waterfalls and natural hot springs.
You will have the chance to discover Rio Celeste which is known for its turquoise blue color (intensified with the reflexion of light) caused by the minerals contained in the water. The river contrast with the intense green tropical vegetation.
The 36 km long Rio Celeste is born at the joining point of two rivers and flows through volcanic hot and sulfur sources before dropping in a amazing waterfall.

Day 9: Tenorio Volcano - Monteverde Reserve


Departure to Monteverde, where the reserve consists in alpine pastures landscapes at the heart of the Tilaràn Cordillera. Monteverde is worldly famous for its tropical cloudforest which contributes to the reputation of Costa Rica as an ecotouristic detination, it also shelters some extraordinary animals and vegetation.

On the way you have the opportunity to stop and visit Las Pumas de Cañas Rescue Center, whose mission is to rehabilitate and ensure good conditions for endangered wildlife in Costa Rica, and encourage society's respect and appreciation for wildlife through these actions.

Day 10: Monteverde Reserve

Discover the biological reserve consisting of a cloudy forest in Monteverde. You can observe the cloudy forest from different walking paths. Approximately 400 bird species, 490 butterfly species and more than 100 mammal species and identified there. Add to this the 2500 plant species (including 500 of orchideas) and thousands of insects species.

Visit a coffee plantation to learn about coffee from the seed to the mug! The visit includes a professional explanation of the whole process (seed collection and delivery of grain).
The Monteverde region is ideal for discovering the authentic culture of Costa Rican coffee, you'll get to taste it at the end of visit.
You will also have the opportunity to discover two typical products of Costa Rican agriculture with a little introduction on cocoa and sugar cane.

Day 11: Monteverde Reserve - Carara National Park - Uvita

Early in the morning, departure for the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.
If the time allows it, possibility of observing crocodiles on the Rio Tarcoles before reaching Quepos Mecca of sports fishing and production of palm oil.
We also suggest to visit the National park Carara, which, although rather small (52 km2), one of the biggest biodiversity of the country offers. The population of birds is there spectacular, in particular that of the red macaws which migrate twice a day between the forest and the nearby coastal mangrove swamps.

Day 12: Uvita

Day at leisure to enjoy the area of Uvita and Marino Balllena National Park. The park was created to protect the biggest coral reef of the country. Its name refers to the humpback wales gathering in the warm waters to reproduce.

You will also have the opportunity to visit the National Forest Life Refuge Barú, a tropical wet forest along a wonderful beach at the mouth of the Rio Barú.

Day 13: Uvita - Sierpe - Drake Bay


Early in the morning, you will head to the Osa Peninsula on the coastal road through Palmar Norte. If you have time and the weather is nice, stop at Central Park to check out the pre-colombian rocks.
Then you will arrive at Sierpe, entrance gate to the wildest national park in Costa Rica.

Note: 1 hour-drive.
Welcome to Sierpe and transfer boat to Bahia Drake, about 1:30 browsing the heart of the Mangrove.
Dinner at the lodge.

Day 14: Corcovado National Park - Station La Sirena (Corcovado National Park) - Drake Bay

Early morning start for a full day exploration of the Corcovado National Park, considered as the best of the wet tropical reserves. You will stroll by boat or by foot through the biggest wet tropical forest of the Pacifque coastline of America with waterfalls and crystal water pools on the walking paths of San Pedrillo. You will have the opportunity to observe a great variety of birds including the harpy and red macaw. This is the best place place to watch jaguars and tapirs particularly on the beaches by dark.

Day 15: Isla del Caño (Corcovado National Park) - Drake Bay

Day of discovery of the Biological Reserve of the Isla de Caño, a place formely sacred for the precloumbius Diquis indians. The coral colored beaches are perfect to relax or to practice snorkeling. Dolphins, wales and manta rays are present in the warm water off the coast.
You also have the opportunity to enjoy the walking paths through the surrounding nature.
Return to the hotel by boat in the afternoon.

Day 16: Corcovado National Park - Drake Bay

Day 17: Drake Bay - Drake Airport - Juan Santamaria Airport


In the early morning, transfer from your lodge to Drake Airport.
You will take a flight to San Jose.

Note 2: Warning - limited weight of luggage ( about 12 kg per person )

Three hours before departure time is the connection with your international flight.
