The Juan Fernandez Islands

Of volcanic origin, with a very steep relief, Robinson Crusoe Island was discovered randomly in 1575 by the Portuguese navigator Juan Fernandez. The name of the island, Robinson Crusoe, comes from literature: it is the experience of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk on the island who inspired the English writer Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) to write his world famous Robinson Crusoe story. Selkirk was forced to live four years and four months alone on the island for disobeying his superiors. However, he is not the only one to have set foot on this island. On the island you will discover beautiful places, of both historical and natural interest. The National Park is home to some endemic species such as the Juan Fernandez Hummingbird. Its marine ecosystem is as unique as its terrestrial one. Among the activities offered on the island, you can choose to go diving in the sea and enjoy exploring the remains of a sunken ship that lies at the bottom of the ocean since 1915. You can also go by boat to the cave which housed Alexander Selkirk, located 16 km from Puerto Ingl├ęs. Excursions not to be missed are the Mirador Selkirk, where Selkirk kept scanning the horizon, hoping to see a liberating ship, and the trek to Villagra and La Punta, crossing the whole island.
